What is the link between toxoplasmosis infection, red meat, and pets?

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common parasitic diseases in the world, caused by a single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Although many may not be familiar with this disease, it can cause a variety of symptoms, especially in people with weakened immune systems, such as those infected with HIV (AIDS). 

 

The relationship between red meat and toxoplasmosis

 

One of the main ways the Toxoplasma parasite is transmitted to humans is through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat, especially lamb, pork, and beef. When animals infected with the parasite eat grasses and plants contaminated with cat feces, the parasite accumulates in their muscle tissue, which can be transmitted to humans when they consume this meat. 

 

Relationship between pets and toxoplasmosis

 

Cats are the definitive host of the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, as the parasite reproduces sexually in the intestines of cats and is excreted in their feces. Consequently, the feces of infected cats represent a major source of environmental contamination, and the parasite can be transferred to soil, water, and food, increasing the chances of transmission to humans and other animals. 

 

How can a person get infected?

 

In addition to eating raw or undercooked meat, humans can become infected with Toxoplasma gondii through the following methods: 

 

Dealing with contaminated soil: Parasite eggs can live in the soil for several months. 

Eating unwashed fruits and vegetables: especially if they are contaminated with cat feces. 

Handling infected cats: especially changing their litter or touching their fur. 

Transmission from mother to fetus: If a pregnant woman becomes infected for the first time during pregnancy, the parasite may be transmitted to the fetus, which may lead to miscarriage or birth of a child with birth defects. 

 

Symptoms of toxoplasmosis

 

In most cases, people infected with toxoplasmosis do not show any symptoms, or they may experience mild, flu-like symptoms, such as: 

 

  • Slight rise in temperature. 
  • Swollen lymph nodes. 
  • headache. 
  • Muscle pain. 
  • rash. 

 

But in some cases, especially in people with weakened immune systems, the infection may be more serious and cause complications such as: 

 

  • encephalitis. 
  • Myocarditis. 
  • Pneumonia. 
  • Vision problems. 
  • Prevention of toxoplasmosis infection. 

 

Toxoplasmosis infection can be prevented by following these tips:

 

  • Cook meat thoroughly: Meat must be cooked thoroughly to kill the parasite. 
  • Wash vegetables and fruits well: before eating or cooking them. 
  • Wash your hands thoroughly: After handling soil, raw meat, or cat litter. 
  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat: especially for pregnant women and people with weak immune systems. 
  • Keeping cats clean: Change their litter regularly.
